Gerrymandering officially began in the United States in 1812. The term was coined that year after Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signed a bill redrawing state senate districts to favor his Democratic-Republican Party, with one peculiarly shaped district in the Boston Gazette described as looking like a "salamander".
